Quassia bark has a bitter taste and antiviral, antibacterial, anthelmintic, insecticidal and, according to recent studies, anti-tumour activity.

The decoction (tea) is used to stimulate appetite, promote digestion, relieve dyspepsia, reduce fever and eliminate parasitic infestations, such as various intestinal worms and malaria. The decoction is sometimes used topically as an insect repelant.
