Description: Traditional Fluid Extract of Heartsease, Viola tricolor, in 25 % of Ethanol and Purified Water.

In traditional herbal medicine, Viola tricolor is considered to be a blood purifying herb, specific for eczema and skin eruptions with serous exudates (especially with rheumatic symptoms), for bronchitis with phlegm in the lungs, bronchitis and whooping cough, and rheumatism. Used both internally and topically for any skin disorder with purulent discharge (psoriasis, acne), and also for autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis) and edema. Used topically for cradle cap, diaper rash, weeping sores, itchy skin, varicose ulcers and ringworm. Believed to be of benefit as a diuretic in cystitis and in capillary fragility associated with easy bruising.

Modern studies have confirmed anti-inflammatory, expectorant and diuretic properties, due to the presence of salicylic derivatives, saponins, flavonoids, mucilages, and carotenoids. The demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects are ascribed to the synergistic action of the salicylic derivatives, rutin, and saponins. Flavonoids, and especially rutin, strengthen capillaries and small vessels. Saponins and mucilage are demulcent, explaining the expectorant benefit in bronchitis. (FARMACIA, 2009, Vol. 57, 2 219)

Caution: Some individuals may be allergic to heartsease products and should not use this remedy, particularly in the presence of asthma. Also, heartsease products should not be taken with prescription diuretics without the advice of a medical doctor or pharmacist.

Recommended Dose: 1-2 ml (20-40 drops) three times a day.

For maximal therapeutic results, modern herbalists use blend of herbs with multiple beneficial effects. Viola tricolor extract is a common ingredient in herbal blends for blood and skin purification. For more information or for custom made combination, please contact Newton's pharmacy and click here.
