Eczema

Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is characterized by patches of reddened, inflamed, and scaly skin. Commonly affected areas include the face, scalp, hands, wrists, elbows, and behind the knees, though symptoms can appear anywhere on the body. The condition is typically accompanied by intense itching, which can lead to scratching, aggravating inflammation and potentially causing secondary infections.

Eczema is often hereditary and frequently associated with allergic conditions such as hay fever or asthma. Common triggers include exposure to allergens such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, certain foods, synthetic dyes, harsh soaps, and metals like nickel. Environmental factors such as dry air, sun exposure, and emotional stress can also contribute to flare-ups.

In cases of poor circulation, particularly in the lower legs, eczema may appear as "stasis dermatitis"—a subtype triggered by fluid buildup and venous insufficiency.

Natural Remedies and Newton’s Products

At Newton’s Pharmacy, we recommend a combination of topical and internal remedies to soothe inflammation, support skin healing, and address underlying triggers.

Topical Relief

  • Newton’s Derma Cream: A gentle, homeopathic formula designed to calm itching and reduce redness. Apply to affected areas 2–3 times daily or as needed.

  • Chamomile or Licorice Creams: Known for their anti-inflammatory effects, these can soothe irritation and support skin regeneration.

Internal Support

  • Newton’s Derma Tablets: A homeopathic remedy formulated to support the body’s natural response to skin irritation, redness, and eczema-like symptoms.

  • Newton’s Blood Purification Drops: Contains herbs such as Burdock, Sarsaparilla, Echinacea, and Dandelion, traditionally used to detoxify the blood and support clearer skin from within.

  • Flaxseed Oil & Evening Primrose Oil: Rich in essential fatty acids, these help maintain skin hydration and reduce inflammation.

  • Zinc and Copper: Zinc supports skin repair and immune function; copper should be taken alongside zinc to maintain mineral balance.

  • Vitamin A & E: Aid in skin renewal and reduce dryness. Use high doses of vitamin A short-term only (reduce to 10,000 IU daily after initial improvement). Pregnant women should not exceed 5,000 IU daily.

  • Grape Seed Extract: High in antioxidants, it may reduce allergic responses and support skin health.

Homeopathy

Common remedies that may be considered based on specific eczema presentations include:

  • Arsenicum album: For dry, itchy skin with burning pain worsened at night or by cold.

  • Graphites: For thickened, cracked skin with honey-like discharge.

  • Natrum muriaticum: For dry, raw skin with small blisters, often aggravated by emotional stress.

  • Petroleum: For deep cracks and oozing in cold weather.

  • Sulphur: For moist, itchy, and inflamed skin with burning after scratching.

Additional Tips

  • Eliminate common allergens such as dairy, eggs, nuts, shellfish, and wheat from the diet if suspected triggers.

  • Wear loose, cotton clothing to reduce skin irritation.

  • Avoid harsh soaps, synthetic fragrances, and hot baths. Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it.

  • Apply emollient creams or oils regularly to prevent dryness.

  • Use lukewarm water for showers and avoid bubble baths and perfumed products.

If symptoms persist, worsen, or are associated with infection, we recommend consulting a healthcare professional. Newton’s Pharmacy also offers custom herbal blends and professional consultations to guide individualised skin care plans.
