Additional Information: Rhubarb has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine since ancient times. Rhubarb has soothing, anti-inflammatory and astringent effect on the gastric lining and may relieve constipation and some cases of diarrhoea and stop bleeding, as well as speed up healing and recovery in gastric ulcers, after surgery, and particularly post stomach cancer surgery. Reseachers from National University of Singapore have studied the toxicological and anti-neoplastic potentials of the main anthraquinones from Rhubarb and have shown that some of these active ingredients have specific anti-tumour properties and enhance the effects of chemotherapy.The most abundant anthraquinone of rhubarb, emodin, was capable of inhibiting cellular proliferation, induction of apoptosis, and prevention of metastasis. Rhubarb is classified as herbal laxative, and, as most other laxatives, should be used only under professional supervision in inflammatory bowel disease and should not be used long term or if there is bowel obstruction. Short-term or occasional use is safe in appropriate dosage unless otherwise contraindicated. The recommended dose is:
• Dried powder: one to six grams per day
• 4:1 dried decoction extract: one to three grams per day
