Adhatoda is a highly valuable Ayurvedic medicinal plant used traditionally as expectorant and antispasmodic and employed in the treatment of cold, cough, asthma and other bronchial conditions.The alkaloid vasicine is one of the major components of the plant and is responsible for most of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and bronchodilatory activities. A synthetic derivative of vasicine, bromhexine, with proven liquefying/expectorant activity, is the main ingredient of most commercially available cough syrups in Europe, India, and the USA.
