Indigenous to Central and South America, damiana (Turnera diffusa, Passifloraceae) is a small flowering shrub which blooms with bright yellow flowers from early to late summer.
Damiana is a traditional tonic, believed to stimulate the mind and lift the spirit. Valued as restorative for the nervous system, particularly when anxiety and low mood are present. Damiana is used as an aphrodisiac, in the management of male performance. Damiana is also a diuretic herb and an urinary cleanser.
Traditionally, damiana leaves are considered as an aphrodisiac and often blended with other herbs with similar effects, such as Muira puama, Korean ginseng and Gingko biloba, as in Newtons Male Drops.
