Gentian is the most commonly prescribed bitter herb, used to stimulate digestion and the flow of gastric juices, the assimilation of nutrients and the functions of the liver and the gallbladder.
By improving digestive function, gentian increases the absorption of nutrients such as iron and vitamin B12 and is therefore of benefit in iron-deficiency anaemia.
