Barberry is a well established traditional medicine of the American Indians. This plant has been used for over 2,500 years for its medicinal properties. Barberry and goldenseal are often used for similar medicinal purposes because of their berberine content.

Berberine is most beneficial for the liver and gall bladder, it can lower blood sugar (particularly in women with PCOS), improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and lower waist-to-hip ratio in women with PCOS. A study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed that berberine can improve insulin sensitivity by adjusting adipokine (cell-signaling proteins) secretion. Adipokines have been shown to mediate inflammation and insulin resistance.

Barberry preparations improve the flow of bile and reduce the chances of gallstone formation. Barberry bark has astringent qualities and this may help healing along the intestinal wall. Barberry has a highly beneficial effect on the functioning of the digestive system as a whole and is used in the traditional treatment of various digestive disorders.

Studies on humans are mixed, but some have been positive.and seem to support the traditional use of brahmi to help with memory and focus and in ADHD.

A 2013 study found that adults taking brahmi showed improvements in their ability to retain new information. Participants taking a brahmi extract showed significantly improved performance in their memory and brain function.

Clinical research shows that Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) is first and foremost a memory enhancer. The results indicate that Bacopa supplementation may increase attention, heighten focus, reduce stress, and promote calmness.
