Meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria.
Traditional medicine for heartburn, gastritis, peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia.
Reduces inflammation and acidity in the stomach, protects and heals the gastric and intestinal lining, relieves wind and distension and has some antiseptic activity. Traditionally known to be of great benefit in heartburn, gastritis, peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia. Herbalists still recommend meadowsweet as one of the best digestive herbs for the treatment of ulcers and heartburn. By reducing the acidity levels around the joints, it also reduces the pain due to gout and arthritis.
The results from recent clinical trials provide support of the traditional use of this plant in the treatment of different inflammatory conditions. Further investigation of the anti-inflammatory compounds could reveal the mechanism of anti-inflammatory action of these extracts.
