Glue ear is a condition characterized by the buildup of thick, sticky mucus behind the eardrum, often leading to hearing difficulties and discomfort. It commonly occurs in children following repeated ear infections, colds, or respiratory conditions. Other contributing factors include swimming, exposure to cold air, or complications involving the sinuses. Breastfed children may have a reduced risk of developing glue ear due to enhanced immune protection.
Muffled or reduced hearing
Speech or developmental delays in children
Balance issues or clumsiness
Social or learning difficulties
Turning up volume on devices or failing to respond to verbal cues
Goldenseal
Goldenseal has traditionally been used for its mucous membrane-drying and antimicrobial properties. It can help reduce persistent mucus in the ear. Use a tincture (¼ to 1½ teaspoons in water) up to three times daily, or as directed by a practitioner. Consistent use for 3–4 months may be needed for best results.
Echinacea & Chamomile
These herbs support immune function and reduce inflammation. Echinacea tincture can be diluted and used as an ear drop (½ tsp of water per dose), followed by plugging the ear with cotton. Both herbs may also be added to a warm hand or foot bath to assist lymphatic drainage and support recovery.
Ear Oil Blend
A warm oil remedy can relieve ear pain. Warm a teaspoon of grapeseed or sweet almond oil and add:
1 drop Tea Tree essential oil
3 drops German Chamomile or Lavender essential oil
Apply a few drops into the ear and plug with cotton wool. A warm compress can be applied for further comfort.
Aromatherapy Steam Inhalations
Steam inhalations using chamomile, eucalyptus, or lavender essential oils may reduce catarrh and support sinus and ear drainage. A hot compress with diluted lavender or rosewood oil can also be applied around the ears, nose, and throat.
Dietary Support
Mucus-producing foods, especially cow's milk dairy, sugar, and peanuts, may aggravate glue ear. Consider alternatives such as goat’s milk or soy products. Incorporate mucus-reducing foods like:
Garlic
Onions
Watercress
Parsley
Celery
Ensure a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein or fish to support immune health and healing.
Graphites – for thick, yellowish discharge from the ear
Kali bichromicum – for sinus pain and thick mucus
Sulphur – for foul-smelling yellow discharge
Calcarea carbonica – for chronic discharge with swollen glands or night sweats
Kali muriaticum 6x – for thick mucus
Ferrum phosphoricum 6x – for early inflammation and pain
Dose: One tablet of the appropriate remedy, four times daily for one week, or as directed by a homeopath.
Rescue Remedy & Passionflower
Helpful for calming anxious children, particularly when ear pain is present. Use two drops of each under the tongue as needed.
Cranial Osteopathy
Gentle manipulation techniques by a qualified osteopath may help relieve glue ear by encouraging fluid drainage and balancing pressure in the middle ear.
Ear Candling
Although controversial, some people use ear candles to draw out fluid and wax. If considering this, always follow safety instructions and consult a healthcare professional.
Ground Ivy – traditionally used to dry out ear and sinus congestion
Plantain – known for soothing mucous membranes and supporting tissue healing
Note: Always consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before beginning any new treatment, especially for children. Remedies should be tailored to the individual’s specific symptoms and needs.
