Description:

Traditional Hawthorn Berry Extract 1:1 in 30% Ethanol and Purified Water

The medicinal properties of hawthorn (Crataegus spp., a genus comprising approximately 300 species) have been utilized by traditional medicine for a variety of therapeutic purposes for many centuries. 

Traditionally, Hawthorn is used for diseases of the heart and blood vessels  It is also used to treat both low blood pressure and high blood pressure, “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), and high cholesterol. 

Hawthorn has been traditionally used as a diuretic for kidney and bladder disorders, to treat stomach ache, stimulate appetite, and improve circulation and lower blood lipids. Other traditional uses for hawthorn include treatment of stress, nervousness, and sleep disorders. Studies in animals suggest that hawthorn extracts exert effects on the CNS, including relief of anxiety and pain.

Preparations containing hawthorn remain popular in Europe for the treatment of high or low blood pressure, tachycardia, or arrhythmias, with the revised Complete German Commission E Monographs approving the use of leaves and flowers for the treatment of long-term heart failure.

Pregnancy/nursing
In the absence of clear data, hawthorn extracts should be avoided in pregnancy and lactation. Animal studies have not shown any adverse effect on embryo development.

Interactions
None well documented.

Side Effects
Serious adverse reactions are rarely reported. Mild to moderate dizziness, headache, rash, heart palpitations, and nausea and other intestinal symptoms have been reported.
