Extract of Buchu Extract in ethanol and purified water.

Buchu, Barosma betulina, is a native plant of Southern Africa with long history of traditional medicinal use by the local tribes.

Historically, buchu has been used to treat inflammation, and kidney and urinary tract infections; as a diuretic and as a stomach tonic.

Other uses include carminative action and treatment of cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis, and gout. It also has been used for leukorrhea and yeast infections.

Evidence based studies support  have identified some of the key constituents responsible for the beneficial pharmacological actions of the leaves of this plant, including significant diuretic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Buchu is still used as a supplement to help disinfect the urinary tract during infections of the bladder (cystitis), urethra (urethritis), prostate (prostatitis), or kidney (pyelonephritis) and in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases.

In general, herbalists recommend Buchu leaf extract for:

• urinary tract infections
• prostate infections
• general infections and inflammation
• gout
• arthritis and rheumatism
• eczema and psoriasis
• low sperm count
• haemorrhoids
• hypertension
• excess weight, due to its diuretic properties.
