Newton's Herbal Creams and Ointments

Established in 1865, by Mr Edward Newton, a herbalist and a pharmacist, Newton's pharmacy continues to operate as a wholistic pharmacy where herbalists and pharmacists continue to work together to design hand made skin care products based on traditional formulas, herbal extracts and natural cream and ointment bases. 

Newton's practitioners love and know herbs and plant based skincare. We know that herbs are natural healers and rejuvenators, rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, alpha-hydroxy acids, and other compounds with a wide range of therapeutic effects.  We enjoy making traditional herbal creams, ointments, shampoos, and other herbal products and spreading the knowledge and appreciation of the power of medicinal herbs.

It is important to know what kind of base, a cream or an ointment one, best suits your purpose. 

Creams and gels are water based, spread easily over larger areas, have faster absorption and quickly disappear from the surface of the skin. Creams are preferred as daily moisturisers and skin rejuvenating products or when used to deliver an ingredient to the deeper layers of the skin or beyond. Cream are also excellent for moist and weeping wounds.

In comparison to the above, ointments and balms are oil based, sticky, harder to spread, have much slower absorption and remain on the surface of the skin for much longer. The ointments form protective layer over the treated area, trapping moisture underneath and shielding against the elements. In addition, their staying power insures longer contact with the spot of concern. Ointments and balms are best for very dry, cracked skin, cracked heels or hands, chapped lips, etc., and for small lesions requiring longer contact with the active ingredients. We recommend covering the treated spot with dressing to ensure the ointment remains in place under clothing and overninght. Change dressing daily.
