Horse chestnut seeds extract have astringent constituents, helping to tone the vein walls which, when slack or distended, may become varicose, hemorrhoidal or otherwise problematic. Horse chestnut seeds extract (HCSE) is widely used in Europe and is becoming increasingly popular in North America as well.
Witch hazel extract (Hammamelis virginiana) is also considered an astringent, and has reported topical uses in treatment of haemorrhoids, varicose veins, bruises, minor abrasions and to reduce discomfort of the perineum after childbirth.
