The rosehips from dog rose (Rosa canina) are one of the richest plant sources of vitamin C, with about 1700 to 2000 milligrams per 100 grams in the dried product.
In contrast, an orange contains 50 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams and a kiwifruit 90 milligrams per 100 grams. In addition, Rosehips have a high content of vitamin A, calcium and iron and are rich sources of bio flavonoids, pectin, vitamin E, selenium, manganese, and B complex vitamins, and contain moderate amounts of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and silicon.
Rosehip teas and blends are valued as beverage for longevity, beaty and well being, with natural rejuvenating effect internally and externally. A 1983 study at the University of Santiago in Chile found that rosehip seed oil reduced the appearance of scars, wrinkles and UV damage.
Danish and Norwegian studies have found that rosehip seed powder reduced pain and improves movement for osteoarthritis sufferers through marked anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Similar results were observed in patients with other autoimmune disorders where inflammation was present. Compounds in rosehip may help to reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. The strong antioxidant compounds help protect the heart and may be of benefit in diabetes.
