Wild yam conains active ingredients, similar in molecular structure and pharmacological effects to human progesterone. The plant is used as the raw source for the manufacture of bio-identical progesterone by the pharmaceutical industry worldwide. The main traditional uses and modern applications of Wild yam as a medicinal herb are based on it's natural progesterone-like effects, of benefit in menopause, lacking or irregular menstruation, and related conditions. In addition, wild yam reduces inflammation and pain, relaxes stiff muscles, helps to relieve cramps and colic, and can be of significant benefit in the treatment for arthritis, gallbladder inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome, and diverticulitis.
