The use of Red Yeast Rice in traditional Chinese Medicine dates back as far back as the Tang Dynasty in China in 800 A.D. The presence of naturally ocurring monacolins have made this a valuable natural health supplement. Red yeast rice may lower levels of total cholesterol and specifically LDL, or "bad" cholesterol. Taking 0.6-1.2 grams of red yeast rice daily for an average of 4.5 years decreases total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol, and triglycerides. It also decreases the risk of heart disease-related events, heart attacks, and death in people with a history of heart attack.
