In traditional European, Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, Hydrangea is valued as a kidney antiseptic and often used for treatment of mild kidney and bladder problems

In 2009, researchers published in "Science" that the root of Hydrangea contains halofuginone, an active ingredient fighting autoimmune disorders, such as scleroderma, while still allowing the immune system to function normally. 

The study was the work of researchers from the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine and the Immune Disease Institute at Children’s Hospital Boston (PCMM/IDI), together with the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and was published in the 5 June 2009 issue of the journal Science.

Hydrangea root is used in a variety of forms including powder, liquid extract, syrup, tincture and tea.
