Botanical Name: Turnera diffusa
Indigenous to Central and South America, Damiana is a small flowering shrub which blooms with bright yellow flowers from early to late summer. The fruit of the shrub is said to have a taste similar to figs. Used traditionally as a tisane (infusion), damiana leaves are considered relaxing and sedating, as well as an aphrodisiac. The herb has been used as a tonic for muscle weakness, for stomach ache and bladder and kidney infections, for respiratory conditions (including asthma and influenza), as a treatment in diabetes, for women's health issues (including to promote ovulation), and for skin disorders. Macerated with tequila, damiana leaves are used in Mexico and South America as a hallucinogen and "love potion."
Traditionally, Damiana leaves potions are used is a tonic, stimulating the mind and lifting the spirit. Valued as restorative for the nervous system, particularly when anxiety and depression are present. Furthermore, Damiana is used as an aphrodisiac, in the management of premature ejaculation and impotence, and an urinary antiseptic of benefit in bladder and kidney infections.
